Alexandra Panina, a member of the board of the Inter RAO energy company, told RIA Novosti that electricity exports to Abkhazia are carried out on the basis of prepayment under an agreement that will be valid from October 8 to December 31, 2024. The issue of extending the agreement has not yet been discussed.

Every year, from November to April, there is a shortage of electricity in Abkhazia due to its intensive operation and a decrease in water supply at IngurGPP. To eliminate the deficit, the country was forced to purchase electricity from Russia. Illegal mining is called another reason for the energy shortage, according to various sources, "home" crypto farms account for up to 60% of electricity consumption in the republic.
