On February 1, US President Donald Trump signed a decree on increasing duties on Canadian goods, which were to take effect on February 4. However, after negotiations with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the United States agreed to postpone the imposition of duties for a month. This decision was the result of Canada's commitment to allocate about $900 million to strengthen border security with the United States and combat the spread of fentanyl.
However, on February 24, Trump announced his intention to continue imposing new customs duties on US trading partners according to a previously set schedule, which creates uncertainty in trade relations between the two countries.
