Finland tripled fertilizer purchases in Russia and doubled aluminum exports in 2024, despite the closure of the land border

As follows from the data of Eurostat, which RIA-Novosti cites today, the total figures of mutual trade turnover between Finland and Russia from January to September 2024 showed a significant decrease. One of the determining factors was the land border between the countries closed a year ago, due to the influx of migrants from third countries.

The total volume of trade amounted to 960.6 million euros, 31% less than a year earlier.
Imports of goods from Russia decreased by 25% to 685.5 million euros, exports decreased by 1.7 times, amounting to 275.1 million euros.

Nickel supplies are the leader in the structure of Finnish imports from Russia. They were carried out for 509.1 million euros (-34%). Inorganic chemistry products were supplied by 52.3 million (+250%), various equipment by 50.6 million euros (+90%), gas by 25.2 million (+8.9%) and fertilizers by 14.4 million, the supply of which was increased 3.6 times. The Finns supplied mainly copper to Russia for 152.3 million euros (-21%), aluminum for 23.3 million (+100%), chemical industry products for 15.8 million (+35%) and various equipment for 11.4 million, the supply of which critically decreased by 7.4 times.

Demand for Russian fertilizers has been growing throughout the year. So, in the first half of 2024, the EU increased fertilizer imports from Russia by 1.7 times to 1.9 million tons, we talked about this in more detail then.
