Investments in precious stones for investment purposes in Russia began to gain popularity in 2022. Due to sanctions and the reduction of capital preservation methods, private investors have been able to buy investment diamonds without paying VAT at international market prices.
Experts estimate the size of the Russian investment diamond market in the range of 75 to 100 million US dollars, which corresponds to about 5% of the global trade volume. Sales of investment diamonds are expected to grow by 5-10% annually in the coming years.
However, according to experts, this area is too local to compensate for the protracted crisis in the diamond industry as a whole. At the end of last year, prices reached their lowest level since 2015.
