The EU has frozen 30 million euros allocated to Georgia
July 9th. /MEDIA TALK/.On Tuesday, July 9, it became known that the European Union had frozen 30 million euros allocated to Georgia. This was reported by TASS with reference to the statement of the EU Ambassador to the state Pavel Gerchinsky at an international conference in Tbilisi.

He explained that the money was supposed to be used to strengthen the country's defense capability, but the bloc intends to reduce funding for Georgia due to its adoption of the law on foreign agents. Thus, a large amount has been frozen and will not be transferred to the Ministry of Defense of the state.

The EU Ambassador added that this is only the first step. He also stressed that the process of the country's accession to the European Union has been suspended.

It should be noted that the law on foreign agents was adopted in Georgia in May. According to the document, NGOs and mass media are required to register in the register if more than 20% of their funding comes from abroad. Fines are provided in case of non-compliance with the law.

The adoption of the document was accompanied by large-scale protests in Georgia in 2023 and 2024. President Salome Zarubishvili opposed the law on foreign agents, vetoing the document, but the parliament was able to circumvent it.

Recall that in early July it was reported that the EU imposed duties on imports of eggs and sugar from Ukraine. The measures were taken after protests by European farmers.
