
The statement was read out to the foreign ministers before the meeting, where it was supposed to consider the extension of restrictive measures against the Russian Federation. A decision on this should be made by January 31. Last week, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban made a statement that the sanctions were negatively affecting Hungary's economic situation and called for the restoration of natural gas transportation through Ukraine in order to strengthen the EU's energy security.

"The European Commission expressed its readiness to resume dialogue with Ukraine regarding the export of energy resources to Europe via a pipeline passing through the territory of Ukraine, and also proposed to involve Hungary in this process along with Slovakia," the EC said in an official statement.
The transit of natural gas from Russia through Ukraine has been stopped since January 1, 2025, as the transportation agreement has expired. Slovakia and Hungary are calling on the European Union to take more active measures to restore the largest supply chain.
